Where I'm from, generally people just refer to anyone of an elder generation who are friends of the family or relatives of their friends as 'uncle' or 'aunt', or 'grandmother' and 'grandfather' if they're two generations away. Use of the whole system of terms...er. I suspect most of the younger generation's forgotten them (I don't.). Of course, this just applies to the Chinese population.
